Women You Should Know and What They Said

Hey everyone! Happy new month. I hope March will be a good month for all of you.

Before I go any deeper into this week’s post, I just want to apologise for my absence last week. I got so busy I was unable to prepare any content for that week and if I’m being honest, I almost didn’t post this week! I have been so busy but I’m doing my best to be everywhere at once. However, I’m back now. It always warms my heart when people ask about where the post for the week is because it’s like wow, you are actually reading this. With that said, I am coming back to you with a new series!

International Women’s Day falls in March. 8th March to be specific. It has now become a tradition on Dose of Wonani, to dedicate the month of March to celebrating women. This is done by having a Women’s Month Series. This is the second year I’m doing this. I’m so excited and I have done my best to make the content interesting and educational. I hope you will enjoy and stick with me through it. I also have a few people from different countries coming in to help me with a post or two and I am so excited for that.

To start this off, I’m going to share some quotes that I really like from amazing women I think you should know.

Amanda Gorman

This quote by 22 year old, Amanda Gorman was taken from her poem “The Hill We Climb“. She read the poem during the US Presidential Inauguration earlier this year. It was an amazing piece and really moving. It was amazing to see her on a platform such as that one. A young, black woman shining. Absolutely loved that for her.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

We should all know Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. She has done a lot when it comes to educating on feminism and speaking for women. I would highly recommend watching her Tedx Talk “We should all be feminists”.
The first book I ever read by her was Americanah. I was still in primary school but I will never forget that book. On my reading list is the book “We Should All Be Feminists” Feel free to read that with me. Read about her, read her work and learn something!

Lulu Haangala Wood

I believe Lulu Haangala Wood is one of Zambia’s most influential women. I have been following her for years and like to keep up with what projects she has going on, where she is speaking and all that. Lulu is the co-founder of Afrishop, a UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador, the founder of #WeKeepMovingzm and is also a home cook at The Wood Kitchen. She is also a media personality. Keeping up with her, I have come to understand that Lulu is a learner. She will learn something and turn it into something huge. That’s what she has done with Afrishop and what she is doing with Wood Kitchen. I stan.
If I was asked to give a list of women I would like to get some traits from, Lulu would make that list.

Morgan Harper Nichols

Morgan Harper Nichols is a poet whose book I need to get my hands on. A hardcopy. I absolutely love Morgan. I relate to so many of her pieces. I go to her Instagram profile a lot, especially when I feel like I need my spirit to be lifted. She is a woman who is changing people’s lives with her words. Do you know how good your words have to be for them to be life-changing? If you love poetry or like to write, you should definitely look up her work. I am always amazed by people who have the ability to tell entire stories in a few sentences.

Kamala Harris

Kamala Harris is Americas first woman vice-president. You should know who she is. I absolutely love to see women in power. This is probably because for quite some time, I wanted to one day be the president of Zambia. I really love seeing women lead and be the ones in top positions.
America is obviously not the first country to have a woman in power. Zambia’s current vice-president, Inonge Wina, is a woman too. I just always feel inspired and my heart is always full when I see women lead.

The quotes I’ve shared above have probably been said thousand of times by different people in different ways. However, that doesn’t take away their relevance. I hope that we will all be the light, I hope we will break the glass ceiling, I hope we learn from our failures, and I hope we know just how powerful we are.
